The making of HAVEN’s Cover

I ADORE how Haven‘s cover came out. I mean, I should considering the amount of work I put into it!

For those of you who don’t know, Haven‘s cover was originally a stock photo. I found it on one of my iStock journeys and fell in love with the feel of it. It was exactly what I needed, but not exactly how my main character looks. Honestly, it is EXTREMELY difficult to find a stock photo that looks just like your main character… or any character for that matter. So this is where my photoshop skills came in handy.

Back in 2011 I started school at Holland College. I took the Photography & Digital Imaging course for 2 years, and came out with some killer photo editing skills. I’ve never been so happy to have these skills in my life.

For 3+ hours I worked on this baby, changing her hair colour, skin tone, overall image colouring, and of course her entire face. In the end, the girl on your right looks a LOT more like my main character, Haven, though still not exactly how I picture her, considering her skin tone is more olive/bronzy. But there’s only so much you can do with photoshop before making it look ridiculously unrealistic.

So this is how the Haven cover was born! After all that editing, it went off to the cover designers at Friesen Press who slapped on some beautiful fonts, making the Haven cover what is it today.

Thanks for reading guys! If you have any photoshop specific questions about how I did this, leave them in the comment section below!
